Dreams Of Leaving

The other evening the telephone rang: “Hi, it’s Susan, won’t you tell me how you’ve been? I read the papers; I heard you on the news; I guess you’re famous now. Tell me, do the famous get the blues?”

“It seems a lifetime since last I saw your face; guess you’ve had a high time since: I don’t know how you stand the pace. But please forgive me; I didn’t mean to be unkind; it’s just that I’ve been wondering what’s been running through your mind.”

So, I told her I was happy, how contentment flowed like wine, but I left out those occasions when freedom fills my mind and I have dreams of leaving, and sailing a southern sea; heading where those southern breezes blow. Though my hearth and homefires, they keep a hold on me, my heart won’t let those dreams of leaving go.

I said: “It’s my turn now: come on and tell me all your news”. She said: “Well, I’m married, with a daughter, and we’re expecting number two. We live in the country, in a cottage by the sea, and I’m contented; at least, that’s how it seems to me.”

“And we never want for laughter, and we never want for joy, but there are those times, I must admit, when contentment starts to cloy and I have dreams of leaving, and sailing a southern sea; heading where those southern breezes blow. Though my hearth and homefires, they keep a hold on me, my heart won’t let those dreams of leaving go.”
