You tell me that you want us to be together, but the very next minute you start to talk about the weather. Who cares if it shines or snows, the situation seems to be that everybody knows exactly what you’re doing to me. I know you, you’re exactly like your mother’s daughter: transparent girl, see through you like a glass of water. Hey ho! here comes the sun, shining down on me. I just wanna be glad, but you just wanna be free. Tell me now, tell me all the reasons why you wanna break my heart. Tell me how, tell me how you’re managing to force our lives apart. Sing it out, let me hear the reasons for the things you’re trying to do. Tell me now, tell me what’s the matter with you? Time goes by and the situation’s getting stronger. Had a feeling today that it can’t go on much longer. Hey, hey! here comes the crunch: it’s going to be the end of me. Today I had a hunch that very soon you’re gonna be free. Tell me now, tell me all the reasons why you wanna break my heart. Tell me how, tell me how you’re managing to force our lives apart. Sing it out, let me hear the reasons for the things you’re trying to do. Tell me now, tell me what’s the matter with you?

The hour is very late and I can see you’re getting worried: coffee’s finished, candle’s low, and soon you’ll be asleep; long walk home; the night is chilly, and my room is cosy. I’ve got a feeling you won’t be leaving tonight. Never thought to ask you why you really came to see me. Was it just the pictures pinned so neatly on the wall? Candlelight paints shadows of your figure on the ceiling. I’ve got a feeling you won’t be leaving at all. Ah, don’t try to fight it, Baby: I see the lovelight in your eyes. Just hold me tight, then maybe you’ll see that I’m not telling lies. Never thought to ask you why you really came to see me. Was it just the pictures pinned so neatly on the wall? Candlelight paints shadows of your figure on the ceiling. I’ve got a feeling you won’t be leaving at all.

She wakes me very early in the morning; brings me coffee and a plate of food; covers up my mouth to stop me yawning: she says it’s very rude. Leads me very gently to the window; watches while I breathe the morning air, and then I know exactly what she’s thinking when I feel her run her fingers through my hair. Brown eyed girl: sleeper’s dream come true. Brown eyed girl, sparkling like the dew. Other girls make living complicated: their biggest aim in life’s a wedding ring, but brown eyed girl makes me want to sing. Tiptoe through the tulips in the springtime; running through the grass beside the stream; looking through the trees towards the sunlight in her morning dream. Brown eyed girl will never tie her heartstrings: you’ll always find her gay and fancy-free, but if you ever wonder what she’s thinking, you just watch the way her eyes are searching me. Brown eyed girl: sleeper’s dream come true. Brown eyed girl, sparkling like the dew. Other girls make living complicated: their biggest aim in life’s a wedding ring, but brown eyed girl makes me want to sing.

Feeling low, take a ride to a show in town. Hear the jokes, have a drink and a laugh at the clown. In a whirl, see a girl with a smile in her eyes. Never thought I’d be brought down by her lies. In a trance, watch her dance to the beat of the drums. Faster now, sweating brow, I’m all fingers and thumbs. Wonder why (I) hit the sky when she blows me a kiss. In a while, run a mile: I’m regretting all this. “Ha ha!”, said the clown,“has the king lost his crown?” “Is the night being tight on romance?” “Ha ha!” said the clown. “Is it bringing you down “that you lost your chance?” Time to go, close the show, wave the people goodbye. Grab my hat, grab my coat, look that girl in the eye. “Where’s your home? What’s your phone number? Stop fooling round!” Could have died, she replied: “I’m the wife of the clown!” “Ha ha!”, said the clown,“has the king lost his crown?” “Is the night being tight on romance?” “Ha ha!” said the clown. “Is it bringing you down “that you lost your chance?”

Get up in the morning with the birds still singing, get an inspiration for a song; and as I hear the Sunday morning bells start ringing, I often wonder how she gets along. Did you meet here there? That wasn’t the intention. Did you see her there? Hey, what’s it all about? Do you think of her? Now it’s funny you should mention it, I often wonder how she’s making out. Strolling down the avenue on Sunday morning, I’ve nearly got the lyric for the song. I had an early night and yet I still keep yawning, and still I’m wondering how she gets along. Did you meet here there? That wasn’t the intention. Did you see her there? Hey, what’s it all about? Do you think of her? Now it’s funny you should mention it, I often wonder how she’s making out.

Now everybody knows the reason for The Fall, when woman tempted man in Paradise’s hall. This woman, she tempted me and she took me for a ride, and, like the weary fox, I need a place to hide. She walked through the corn leading down to the river; her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun. She took all the love that a poor man could give her and left him to die like a fox on the run. It was many years ago, but it feels like yesterday, when she led me through the corn on that fateful summer day. I saw the sunlight in her hair; I saw the promise in her eyes; and I didn’t even care that her words of love were lies. She walked through the corn leading down to the river; her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun. She took all the love that a poor man could give her and left him to die like a fox on the run. Come raise your glass of wine and fortify your soul; We’ll talk about the world and the friends we used to know. I’ll illustrate a girl who wandered through my past. She didn’t care to stay; the picture cannot last. She walked through the corn leading down to the river; her hair shone like gold in the hot morning sun. She took all the love that a poor man could give her and left him to die like a fox on the run.

Hello, it’s me: I need to see you. I’m feeling blue as ever; all I need is us together. Hello, it’s me: I’m hoping that you can take away this sadness, and turn me on to gladness. I only want to see you. Hello (it’s easy) Hello (to call you) Hello, it’s me. Hello, it’s me; I hope you don’t mind: I had to hear your sweet voice telling me I’ve made the right choice. Hello, it’s me: you’re really too kind: with just a conversation you fill me with elation. I really want to see you. Hello (it’s easy) Hello (to call you) Hello, it’s me.

Hello World 04:12
I used to wake up every morning feeling down, down, down, and my heart was filled with sadness, like a clown, clown clown. I didn’t care for anybody; I was cool, oh so cool! I’d been hiding out from true love, like a fool, fool, fool. Hello, world, today I feel like someone. Hello, world, today I’ll sing a glad song. Hello, world, now I know what love can do for me. Hello, world, (hello, hello). Hello, world, (hello, hello). I used to think that life was dull, though I was young, young, young, and that all the songs worth singing had been sung, sung, sung. But I woke up one early morning feeling blue, oh, so blue, then opened back the curtains annd the sun shone through. Hello, world, today I feel like someone. Hello, world, today I’ll sing a glad song. Hello, world, now I know what love can do for me. Hello, world, (hello, hello). Hello, world, (hello, hello).

Listen To Me 02:36
Have you ever wondered why, when everything’s gone wrong, nobody stops to lend a hand; nobody seems to care? Then she looks you in the eye, and suddenly you’re strong, and very soon you realise that you didn’t care about love. Listen to me, I’ll sing a song to change your mind. Your ears are deaf; your mouth is dumb; your eyes are blind. Listen to me and very soon I think you’ll find somebody wants to help you; somebody seems to care; and very soon you’ve forgotten that you didn’t care about love. Did it hurt to realise you’ve been acting very strange; refusing to take the love she gives; pretending you don’t care? Did it take you by surprise to discover how you’d changed? How you forgot to remember that you didn’t care about love.

Goodnight, Sweet Josephine. She’s the Queen of Clapham: every night she goes out with men to trap ‘em in her net of ecstasy. Goodnight, Sweet Josephine. There’s no one else quite like her: if Josephine could, she’d give you her blood; I know that she would love to. Goodnight, Sweet Josephine, we love you. Goodnight, Sweet Josephine, we love you to distraction. Whatever she does the police will take no action: they’re all in love with Josephine. It’s right that Josephine should do just as she pleases. And, whether or not you like what she’s got, she’s guaranteed not to fail you. Goodnight, Sweet Josephine, we love you.

Sitting in the shade of a rain-soaked orange blossom, wondering which way I can turn my sorrow now you’ve left me behind. Counting my bridges and wondering which way to cross ‘em. Thinking of a way I can stop myself from crying. Thinking ‘bout love that brought us together. Thinking ‘bout love that keeps us apart. Wondering why the stormy weather always finds me, the peaceful heart. Good times, bad times, sometimes I used to be happy. Everything swung, even bells rung for me; life was going my way. Sunshine, moonshine; what’s the use of being happy, when all the time you know that it’s just got to fade away? Thinking ‘bout love that brought us together. Thinking ‘bout love that keeps us apart. Wondering why the stormy weather always find me, the peaceful heart.

There’s time in every man’s life when he takes a wife and settles down to dream. And he thinks it’s the end of the line: goodbye to the kind of life he’s been used to leading. Oh, it’s easy to lie, but there’s no denying he still longs for yesterday: sits and dreams his life away; wants to be a bachelor… Hey, Mrs Housewife can’t you see what’s going on? Memories take pride of place in your feller’s mind. Hey, Mrs Housewife, won’t you let your mind roll on, and never let them say that you’ve been blind? Did you think that this was the start of a beautiful heart relationship with him? That his love would be just like before, growing more and more, while you sat around in clover? Oh, it’s over to you, but what can you do? ‘Cos he won’t let the secret out; tell you what it’s all about: he wants to be a bachelor… Hey, Mrs Housewife can’t you see what’s going on? Memories take pride of place in your feller’s mind. Hey, Mrs Housewife, won’t you let your mind roll on, and never let them say that you’ve been blind?

Hello, Maureen. What d’you fancy doing today? Sky’s blue; sea’s green: would you like to sail away? Would you like to sail away? Don’t count the cost: everything you see today will soon be lost. Memories, alone, will stay. Would you like to fade away; yes really fade away to heaven? Really fade away to heaven… Fade away, Maureen. Her mother doesn’t know the way her daughter’s thinking, and all the love she freely gives is wasted. She never lets it show, and though her hopes are sinking, she’s always there to lend a hand, and all the time she tries to understand… Hello, Maureen. What d’you fancy doing today? Sky’s blue; sea’s green: would you like to sail away? Would you like to sail away? Goodbye, Maureen. Happy now the choice is made. Enjoy your dream. Glad to see you made the grade. I’ll say a prayer as you fade away, yes, really fade away to heaven. Really fade away to heaven… Fade away, Maureen…..

about

This album is a reincarnation of my first album, 'Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard', first released in 1969, with one track missing but two more added. It was recorded between 1966 and 1969 at Regent Sound A in London, using Studer J37 4-track tape recorders and a Neumann M49 valve microphone for vocals. This current recording has been remixed and remastered from the original 4-track tapes I was lucky enough to buy before they were due to be destroyed. All the tracks were demos. We re-recorded “Fox On The Run” and “You Won’t Be Leaving” again for the album. In addition, Tony Hicks of The Hollies recorded his lead guitar part on “Listen To Me” and it was edited into the demo, otherwise all the other tracks are the original demos.

”We shall not cease from exploration.
And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started
and know the place for the first time.” – T.S. Eliot
